The Heart Attack Conference announces a new method for catheter replacement of the aortic valve

Dr. Ahmed Abdel Moneim Rezq, a professor of cardiology at Ain Shams University, and a fellow of the Universities of “Modena and Reggio Emilia” in Modena and the University of “San Raffaele” in Milan, Italy, confirmed that the aortic valve can be replaced using catheterization for patients who suffer from aortic valve stenosis.
Dr. Ahmed Rezq said during the Coronary Heart Attacks Conference currently being held in Cairo, “Patients who were suffering from stenonsis of the aortic valve as a result of severe calcification were undergoing open-heart operations to replace the aortic valve, and as a result of the development that occurred in the field of heart disease, it became possible to perform Aortic valve replacement by catheterization without open-heart surgery.

He pointed out that one of the advantages of this technique is that it avoids all the complications of open heart surgery and allows the patient to be discharged safely home within 24-48 hours.

Dr. Ahmed Rezq confirmed that this technique achieves success rates no less than open-heart surgeries, but rather higher success rates, especially in patients who cannot be operated on as a result of their unsuitability for general anesthesia, for instance, elderly patients who suffer from diseases such as diabetes mellitus, kidney diseases, bronchial asthma, explaining that this technique has become available in Egypt and is being performed in several medical centers.
